Almost nothing in this forest grew here by accident. By 1861 the Tijuca massif had been stripped for coffee and sugar, and Rio de Janeiro's springs were failing.
Major Manuel Gomes Archer and a small crew replanted the slopes with roughly 100,000 native seedlings over thirteen years, making this one of the earliest large-scale forest restorations anywhere.
